Grants

The two largest grant programs are:

Federal Pell Grant

Pell Grants are available almost exclusively to undergraduates. Pell Grant eligibility is based on student financial need as determined by information reported on the FAFSA. Current Pell Grant amounts and details of the program are available at StudentAid.ed.gov.

Year-round eligibility for Pell

The U.S. Department of Education has implemented year-round Pell for eligible students. Students must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits for undergraduates). Eligible students can receive Pell in the fall, spring, and summer terms without the summer portion reduced IF the student has 450% or more of remaining Pell Grant eligibility. If the student has less than 500% of remaining Pell Grant eligibility, the amount of Pell used by the student in fall and/or spring terms will directly reduce the amount of Pell Grant available to the student in the summer term. Note: students are limited to 600% (12 semesters) of Pell Grant eligibility.

Tip: Students can check their Pell Grant usage online. More details.

Ohio College Opportunity Grant

As an Ohio grant for college students, this grant is offered to students who are Ohio residents who complete the FAFSA. The grant is prorated based on full or part-time enrollment status. Learn more about the Ohio College Opportunity Grant.

These grants are only awarded to students who meet the strict need guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education and submit the FAFSA to UA by December 1.
